wedding dress for petite

Searching for a wedding dress doesn't have to be a disappointing venture. After all, thousands of small women find them everyday. But if you know what will flatter and what will be a flop it can help avoid any unnecessary sob sessions, and rude sales people, during a stressful day of salon appointments. "You want to make your body look the best that it can on your wedding day," says Judy Reseutek, manager of Flowerama Bridal Salons at Macy's. "If you try on a dress and it looks like you will have to take in a lot of fabric and distort the design, then it's telling you that you should look for another style." Although alterations are always part of a bridal fitting no matter what your size, too many could ruin a dress.
So what looks good on a petite?
A great style -- and one that's the trendiest right now -- is the straight sheath. Long and fitted close to the body, it's almost like a column dress and usually comes in a variety of silks, like shantung or organza. The sheath flatters and elongates the body, making up for the lack of volume with a sexy sophistication. One of the most important things to keep in mind is choosing a shape you feel confident in, so don't go for something simply because it's on the "hot" sheet.
If you prefer tradition, then opt for an A-line or princess silhouette over a big ballgown. In other words, a silhouette that is fitted at the top and widening to a cone shape, and a streamlined style that won't overwhelm. Another good rule of thumb is to look for a gown that has a natural waist, rather than a drop waist or an empire, which can throw your proportions out of whack.
Necklines aren't as limiting; a petite frame can play up pretty shoulders with a bateau neck and show off slender arms in a sleeveless scoop. One thing to watch: Don't overdo it with details. Heavy beading can engulf you rather than enhance. As for color, ivory can be a chic alternative to white, and softer on the skin tone.
Even though my fantasy gown was just that, a fantasy, I did manage to find a perfect dress to wear when I walk down the aisle (as well as a great many helpful saleswomen). After trying on a number of designers who cut their dresses smaller -- Christos, Bianchi, Richard Glasgow, Jasmine and Amsale, to name a few -- I chose a strapless A-line by Amsale with taffeta rosettes in the back and an Alecon lace covering the bodice. It may not look exactly like the one in those earlier pipe dreams -- it looks even better. Now I'm wearing the dress, it's not wearing me.

Indian Wedding Attire for Men

Choosing Indian wedding attire for men in your bridal party can be hard if you are unfamiliar with the culture and customs. With the help of your soon-to-be in-laws and fiancée, getting something you are comfortable in that fits with tradition can be easier.
Indian grooms in a Hindu ceremony wear a light colored jacket and turban.
Having a wedding ceremony that incorporates other cultural rituals in addition to conventional American wedding traditions is becoming more common than ever before. Likewise, some couples are even opting to have two ceremonies, one Indian ceremony and one traditional American ceremony, each honoring the other’s heritage. Whatever your choice, wearing garments from the culture is a way to honor your spouse’s background.

Traditional Men’s Indian Bridal Party Attire

The bridal party in Indian cultures, like most of American wedding parties, is often dressed more formally than guests. Although some men are choosing to wear a more traditional “western” three piece suit, they often save this for a reception and opt to don customary garb for their weddings. Just as the bride’s Indian wedding dress is unique and special, so too should the groom’s attire.

Sherwani

A Sherwani is a long coat-like jacket fastened with buttons. It comes to just below the knees, hitting somewhere high on the calf. The jacket has a Nehru collar, which is a collar that stands up (sometimes called a “mandarin” collar).
This jacket is often cream, light ivory, or gold colored for weddings, especially those in the morning. It can be embroidered with gold or silver. While traditionally light in color, the jackets can be worn in dark colors, like reds, blacks, or navy, typically later in the day. A scarf is sometimes added to the jacket over one or both shoulders.
The Sherwani is worn with tighter fitting pants or trousers called churidars. Churidars are trousers that are loose around the hips and thighs, but are tight and gathered around the ankle.

Jodhpuri

A Jodhpuri suit is a majestic looking suit, sometimes referred to as a “prince” suit. It has a western three-piece look, including coat, trousers, and possibly vest. The Nehru collar is often on the jacket and/or shirt worn with the suit.
This suit would be a perfect choice for the groom in a bridal party. He could choose one with hand-stitched embroidery in silver, gold, or other color in an elegant design.

Kurta Pyjama

The Kurta pyjama is a traditional dress of men in India. It features a loose fitting, collarless long shirt over a pants in a complementary or contrasting color. The style of the Kurta can be either formal or informal, depending on the fabric or embroidered design.
A veshti (dhoti) is a long, flowing skirt considered formal wear for men in India. The draping of the skirt depends on the region in which one is from. The Kurta is often worn with the veshti.

Wedding Dress for Flower Girls

What’s a wedding photo without an angelic flower girl in a fancy dress or a pink-faced cherub of a ring bearer in a short suit? There’s no doubt about it, kids are adorable, especially when dressed up in patent leather shoes. And something about their innocence certainly does add a magical quality to any wedding. Unfortunately, they won’t just arrive in a beautiful organza dress or cream-colored eaton suit—unless you tell them to.
When it comes to second weddings and vow renewals, you’re probably noticing that a lot of things are different this time around. Nowhere is this more evident than in the bridal party. While you might have included a couple of relatives’ children in your first wedding, this time around you and/or your fiancĂ© will likely have kids of your own—and possibly even grandchildren—in your bridal party.
Following are some tips to help you navigate the trials and tribulations of getting kids dressed up, keeping parents and kids happy and getting everyone's attire right for your second wedding or vow renewal ceremony.

Quick Tip for Dressing the Kids for the Wedding

Dress children comfortably! Itchy fabrics, fussy bows and collars or shoes that are too tight are a recipe for disaster. Comfortable kiddies are happie kiddies. Crying, coming from someone other than the bride and her mom, could be stressful for everyone involved..

What to Spend on Kid's Wedding Clothing?

Some things change; some things stay the same. When it comes to your second wedding or vow renewal, the best place to start is with the budget—just like with any wedding. How much are you, and the parents of the other kids involved in the wedding party, willing to spend on the wedding clothes? Is this a one-time splurge? Or are people looking to reuse, resell or pass along their child’s wedding attire? Believe us, there is such a thing as wedding attire etiquette, especially when folks might be traveling quite a ways to be a part of your second wedding. Once you have a firm budget in mind, taking into consideration all the participants, you’ll have a better sense of where to look to purchase, borrow, or have the wedding outfits made. Check out Ebay for discounted wedding clothes for kids: Flower Girl Dresses + Ring Bearer Suits + Eton Suits for little Boys

Timing, Ordering and Sizing When a Body is Growing!

Now that you have your budget, think about your timeframe. The problem with kids is. . .they grow, and sometime not exactly when you want them to! The key with ordering children's wedding attire is to think one step ahead of their next growth spurt. If you’re buying off the rack, that might mean going a size larger in anticipation of some much needed “wiggle” room. If you’re having the wedding clothes made, ask the seamstress to cut the design a bit larger. In either instance, be sure to schedule in some alterations in the weeks leading up to the big day. This means that you’ll want to have the garment in your possession at least a month before the wedding or vow renewal ceremony if the place from which you bought it will not be doing the alterations. So when should you start shopping? As a general rule of thumb, you should start shopping for the kids’ wedding outfits about the same time you begin looking for your wedding dress or outfit.

Formality - It’s all in the fabric and the length

Finally, the fun stuff! So, what kind of wedding attire do you envision the little munchkins wearing? A lot of that probably depends on the formality of your second wedding or vow renewal.

Girls - Flower Girl Dresses

After all, if you’re having a backyard barbeque reception, a floor-length taffeta gown might not be the most appropriate selection! Conversely, a picnic print flower girl dress might not go over so well at a Black Tie affair. There are many contributing factors to the formality of dress, but fabric and length are the big ones to consider. Typically, floor length dresses are reserved for the most formal of occasions, and often these glamorous gowns are a bit “much” for little girls—both in terms of style and excess fabric that they might trip on. Girls can wear ballet length (falls slightly above the ankle) flower girl dresses or tea length (falls below the knee, but above of the ankle) in both formal and casual settings, depending on the fabric. When it comes to a winter wedding, your flower girl might be picture perfect in a satin dress for a more formal affair, or in velour for something a little less formal. In the summer, your flower girl would look lovely in silk for a formal affair, or in linen for a more casual affair. Keep the personality of the child in mind when making your selection too.

Boys' Wedding Clothes

Typically, tuxedos are reserved for the most formal occasions, although when it comes to boys’ wedding clothes, you tend to have a bit more flexibility (just like men!). In addition to the suit or tux options for boys, short ring bearer suits otherwise known as eton suits are an adorable alternative for the under 4 set, especially for your little ring bearer. The great thing about clothing for your junior groomsmen and ring bearer is that they can usually be rented or found at a local consignment shop. If you opt to purchase a suit or tuxedo, little boys can often get extra mileage out of a pair of dress pants and a dress shirt and tie by mixing and matching for other occasions. Though you can ask boys over 4 to accommodate your tastes by wearing a short suit with those adorable high socks and patent shoes, you risk the brooding of a child who’s been humiliated. It’s your wedding, sure, but try to be mindful of the feelings of the little ones. Just like your bridesmaids who might be uncomfortable showing off their arms, little ones can be sensitive to how they are appearing as well. After the wedding is over, children's clothes can be saved for possible future events, for siblings, dropped off at a consignment shop or even sold on ebay as gently used.

Color Scheme

So, you’ve got a budget, you’ve squared away the formality and now it’s time to play with color! Think of the miniature members of your second wedding’s bridal party as the accents on your wedding ensemble—they can either punctuate the picture by wearing a contrasting color or coordinate with the color palette of their adult counterparts. For instance, a bride might choose to have her bridesmaids in pink dresses and to have her smaller attendants in orange. Or, she might have her bridesmaids in a dark blue and outfit the children in the bridal party with a lighter blue. Of course, some brides like to have their little angels in all white, with sashes, bouquets, flower girl shoes and a flower girl tiara providing little bursts of color and sparkle. Don’t leave the boys out of the fun! Play with the ties, cummerbunds, boutonnieres and handkerchiefs of your ring bearer outfits and junior groomsmen ensembles to add a color coordinated pop. Whatever you choose, keep in mind how everyone will look together in the inevitable group shot. Because, while each outfit should function well on its own, they also need to work in harmony as a group.

Wedding Dress for Old Men

Searching for a wedding dress for a man can raise some eyebrows in traditional wedding shops and salons. Calling salons ahead of time and asking male friends where they obtained their dresses can help men choose a bridal shop that will offer them a positive experience. Alternatives to finding a dress in a shop include getting a used dress, designing your own, or buying one from a catalog or online.

Used Wedding Dresses

The popular auction site eBay offers a vast array of wedding dresses, from never been worn to gently used, that are often cheaper than buying from a salon in the first place. Check out the measurements and photos carefully and be sure the seller has a good rating and positive feedback.
Other places to find used wedding dresses include thrift stores, consignment shops, costume rental store sales, and boutiques that cater to cross-dressers.

Design Your Own

Show some fashionable flair and design your own wedding dress. Men who have sewing skills or know someone else who does can use a wedding dress pattern to create a cheap wedding dress that looks stunning. Pick up materials on sale to make the dress even more affordable.
For those with less experience on the sewing machine, designing a dress with the help of a tailor or seamstress is also an option. Bringing in photos of elements and talking about the overall theme of the wedding can help the designer create a one-of-a-kind dress that will fit perfectly, no wedding dress alterations from a seamstress necessary.

Find your best dress.

Catalog Shopping for Men's Wedding Gowns

Pick up some free wedding dress catalogs to look at during leisure time. These catalogs often have designer dresses in a number of styles to choose from. Measuring and fit tips might also be included.
Online catalogs also offer thousands of dresses with just the click of a button. Save money by searching for clearance wedding dresses at closeout prices. Be sure to understand the return policy of catalog orders clearly, especially if the dress is made to order.

Sizing Wedding Dresses for Men

Wedding dresses are notorious for being cut smaller than what Americans are used to seeing. Tag shock is not uncommon when an American size “10” ends up in a size “14” in the dress. A number of gowns are sized according to European or Japanese standards.
Men who cannot personally try on a wedding gown need to carefully size the dress before they order it. Measurements should be taken with an accurate tape, preferably by an experienced tailor. Things to consider include:
  • Women’s dress waists are often just above their belly button, rather than below.
  • Length of torso should be considered if a dress has a special waistline.
  • Take bust line measurements wearing the foundation garments that will be worn with the dress on the wedding day.
Just like women, men who are searching for a gown should consider their body type and what looks best on them. A drop-waist might highlight a bulging stomach, while an empire waistline is often forgiving. Modest wedding dresses with sleeves and high necklines can camouflage masculine biceps and chests.

Dream Dresses

Indian Wedding Dresses

Ancient Indian fashion garments generally used no stitching although Indians knew about sewing. Most clothes were ready to wear as soon as they left the loom. The traditional Indian Dhoti, the Scarf or Uttariya, and the popular Turban are still visible India and continue to be part of Indian fashion. Likewise, for women, the Dhoti or the Sari as the lower garments, combined with a Stanapatta forms the basic ensemble, and once again consists of garments that do not have to be stitched, the stanapatta being simply fastened in a knot at the back. And the Dhoti or the Sari worn covering both legs at the same time or, in the alternative, with one end of it passed between the legs and tucked at the back in the fashion that is still prevalent in large area of India. Indian men and women for these garments in the usually hot Indian climate. - dhoti when he speaks of 'turbans used for trousers', and a kaupina when he is speaking of 'a rag of two fingers' breadth bound over the loins.

Talking of Bollywood sarees, one is also reminded of Sushmita's red chiffon saree in Main Hoon Na! Her sarees became very popular during that time. Every actress in Bollywood chooses her saree from the fashion designer she likes and also makes sure she is dressed keeping the latest fashion trends in mind.

What is also seen a lot in Bollywood these days is an explosion of colors. Indian actresses are experimenting with new colors; they are mix-matching and wearing contrasting color sarees that really catch the eye! Bright multi-colored sarees are really something that is totally in vogue. Fine embroideries, zardosi on velvets, blouses with deep cuts, chiffons are all a part of the wardrobe of most Bollywood actresses today.

Another popular attire of women in Indian clothing is the Indian salwar-kameez. This popular Indian dress evolved as a comfortable and respectable garment for women in Kashmir and Punjab region, but is now immensely popular in all regions of India. Salwars are pyjama-like trousers drawn tightly in at the waist and the ankles. Over the salwars, women wear a long and loose tunic known as a kameez. One might occasionally come across women wearing a churidar instead of a salwar. A churidar is similar to the salwar but is tighter fitting at the hips, thighs and ankles. Over this, one might wear a collarless or mandarin-collar tunic called a kurta. Though the majority of Indian women wear traditional Indian dresses, the men in India can be found in more conventional western clothing like shirts and trousers.
However, men in Indian villages are still more comfortable in traditional attire like kurtas, lungis, dhotis and pyjamas. Indian dresses & styles are marked by many variations, both religious and regional and one is likely to witness a plethora of colors, textures and styles in garments worn by the Indians.

Use of Gold in Indian Fashion: For this reason, some gold ornament is usually worn against the skin at all times. Indian Gold ornaments are popular because the metal is believed to have the power purify anything it touches. Ornaments of gold and other metals, often combined with precious and semi-precious gems and beads, are popular with both men and women in India.
Traditionally, Indian ornaments had economic significance for women too. The ornaments given to her at her wedding constituted a daughter's inheritance from her father ( Dowry).
Customarily land and other property was divided among the sons, though this no longer holds true. In addition, a bride's ornaments were financial security throughout her life.
Ornaments of Indian Fashion :
Nose pin: More common than a nose ring, both are symbols of purity & marriage, though today many unmarried Indian girls wear this adornment.
Necklace: These are very popular fashion accessories across India amongst girls and women of all ages. Necklaces are made of a variety of materials, ranging from glass beads to gold and diamonds. One special necklace is the mangalasutra, worn only by married Indian women. It is the Indian equivalent of the western wedding ring. Traditionally a woman wore it during her wedding ceremony and took it off only if her husband died.
Bangles: Worn on the wrist, bangles are believed to be protective bands and women always wore them as symbolic guards over their husbands. As with other ornaments, bangles today are worn by women of all ages all over India and are made of silver, gold, wood, glass, and plastic, among other materials.
Ear rings: Rings, studs and other ornaments worn in the ears are popular all over the country. In fact, a girl's ears are usually pierced before her first birthday.
Other important ornaments are finger rings, toe rings and anklets. Rings for the fingers are again, of various materials and designs and worn by unmarried and married women. Since the ring has become a common adornment, it is no longer considered a symbol in Indian marriages.
However, toe rings and anklets are still worn mostly by married women. Ornaments for the feet are usually made of silver because gold, being a 'pure' metal, was not supposed to be worn on the feet. This privilege was given only to women of royal Indian families.
In addition to these ornaments is the 'mangatika' or 'tikli'. This ornament, worn at the top of the forehead in the parting of the hair, is usually a small pendant on the end of a chain that is clasped to the hair. Although traditionally this ornament was also worn as a symbol of marriage, today it is not so commonly worn even by married women.
Kajal or Eyeliner : From the time a child is six days old, its mother applies kajal to its eyes and also a small black dot on the forehead to mar the child's beauty. This 'imperfection' is said to protect from evil.
Sindoor : dot on forehead of woman indicating married status of Indian Women, power, protection for her husband. It is applied by the husband as part of wedding ceremony.
Kurti : Kurtis are nothing but short kurtas that are longer than a t-shirt and shorter than a full length kurta. Kurtis have now been an essential part of every woman’s wardrobe. The best part of dressing in a kurti is the fact that they are extremely comfortable and light and can be worn for hours at a stretch. Especially in summer when it is so hot, kurtis are the best bet. Be it college going girls or middle aged women; kurtis are popular across all age categories. Kurtis are worn with jeans, make it the perfect blend of Indian and western fashion. Indian traditional block printed kurtis which are available at a reasonable rate are worn by most urban women and can be seen on the busy shopping streets of Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and other places. Kurtis are available in various materials. Kurtis worn during the months of summer are usually made of thin silk or cotton fabrics while winter season kurtis are made of fabrics like Khadi silk, jute and other thick fibers. Chikan embroidered cotton kurits are very much in trend as the subtle effect of this embroidery on the kurti makes it rich and appealing in all senses. One can even paint a simple khadi kurti with designs, patterns and colours one wishes to be in. Special cuts in kurtis are now being experimented with. For example, Rani Mukherji Kurtis in the film 'Bunty aur Babli' went on to become highly popular amongst the college crowd. Even the kurtis worn by many other actresses in various films are trendy and stylish. While you can experiment with the style, keep your body type in mind and choose a well fitting kurti. Many people also prefer wearing designer kurtis that are beautifully adored with golds and shimmers to wedding occasions. One can pair these kurtis up with embroidered denims or tight fitting churidaars.
Kurtis that are in trend this season are frock-styled kurtis that are well fitting from the top on the shoulders and then flow freely from the chest to the waist. These kurtis should be avoided by people who are broad, short and heavy on their torso as it makes them look fat. This type of kurtis should be worn by people who are slim and tall. There are many styles and cuts available but the key to wearing a good kurti is one that fits you well and enhances your body.
